Manchester United strolled to a 4-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in the opening game of the club's South African tour.

Veteran striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored twice in the first half before Kieran Richardson added a thumping strike and the rout was completed after a bizarre own goal from Orlando keeper Francis Chamsa.

The Red Devils could have scored as early as the opening minute when, after Orlando failed to deal with a corner, John O'Shea's header was cleared off the line.

But within four minutes, United were in front as Paul Scholes, Giuseppe Rossi and Ryan Giggs all combined for Solskjaer to drill home.

Darren Fletcher's far post header from Patrice Evra's cross was smartly saved by Chamsa, who also denied Rossi after a penetrating run.

A minute before the close of the first half Solskjaer grabbed his second goal after poor home defending. Innocent Mdledle was guilty of hesitancy in the box, Solskjaer pinched possession and finished coolly.

Solskjaer was given the second half off, while United keeper Ben Foster was rarely tested save for one comfortable stop from a free kick.

Further goals were always on the cards and Richardson lashed home a shot from the edge of the area after tigerish work from substitute David Jones.

Rossi almost capped an intelligent performance with a goal of his own after turning superbly inside the area before curling his attempt wide.

The fourth goal arrived just past the hour mark when Dong Fangzhuo's low cross sparked a scramble and an attempted clearance from Lehlo Seema simply struck the head of keeper Chamsa and crossed the line.
